Blogoween Book Review: Babies Love Halloween by Scarlett Wing and Stacy Peterson

Synopsis

With colorful, festive artwork and especially sturdy lift-a-flaps, this board book introduces classic Halloween traditions like costume parties and trick-or-treating. Simple sentences reinforce future language structure. Grasping and lifting the flaps helps develop fine motor skills.

Review

With bright colors, varied shapes and patterns, sweet holiday vocabulary, and flaps hiding delightful surprises, Babies Love Halloween is a fun, exciting way for the tiniest monsters to learn and grow. Babies will love exploring the chunky flaps to find a full moon shining on a pumpkin patch and a witch trick-or-treating at a mummy’s house. (Adults will, too I never have been able to resist a board book with an interactive or tactile element.)

Admit it, the suspense is killing you.

One of my favorite things about Cottage Door Press is the level of care they put into making their books educational and fun at the same time. There’s a wonderful sense of excitement and discovery to their books that’s perfect for babies and toddlers absorbing information and making connections about the world around them. The books are so joyful and fun that adult readers can’t help but feel that same excitement, which keeps them engaged and makes them even better teachers for the little ones in their lives.

Lift the flap for a spooky-fun surprise!

I always read a board book or a picture book several times when I’m getting ready to review it, but I read Babies Love Halloween far more times than I normally would because it’s such a feast for the eyes. There are so many different patterns and colors on each page that you can spend several minutes just enjoying illustrator Stacy Peterson’s artwork (and trust me, I did), but through some sort of artistic alchemy the colors and patterns never compete with each other and never overwhelm the eye. Babies won’t be overstimulated; they’ll just enjoy the beautiful shapes and colors and the fun story. As they get older, they’ll recognize more and more details and be able to pick out the polka dots, stripes, and chevrons that they couldn’t discern or verbalize when they were younger. This is definitely a book that grows with a child.

The witch gets bright colors and patterns for her Halloween treat!

This cheery and brilliantly illustrated holiday story will keep babies and toddlers entranced. The bright colors and clever details make it a delight to read and ensure that the book will continue to hold kids’ attention as they grow and develop. With this joyful board book, babies are certain to love Halloween.
