Review
Goodnight Krampus is a delightful Christmas board book and another stellar entry in the Hazy Dell Press Monster Series. In a story that will be very familiar to many kids and parents, Krampus is too excited to sleep on Christmas Eve. Santa Claus must convince him to go to bed, which doesn’t take too long once Krampus realizes that he has to sleep so that Santa can deliver his presents. It’s a sweet, simple story that stands out from the crowd thanks to the unique illustrations and quirky humor characteristic of Kyle and Derek Sullivan’s work.

Derek Sullivan gives his trademark color palette a festive update, filling the pages with bright reds, yellows, and greens that manage to create a lively holiday atmosphere while also retaining his typical soothing tones. Kyle Sullivan’s rhymes are fun with a soft, lovely cadence, making this a perfect book to read to little ones who are having trouble going to sleep during the holidays. This version of Krampus is adorable (and far more kind-hearted than his dark folkloric origins would lead you to expect). His enthusiasm is hilarious, as he accidentally wakes up the Yeti, elves, and narwhals — yes, you read that right…this is Hazy Dell, after all — when he bids them goodnight after he finally decides to turn in for the evening.

Goodnight Krampus is a must-have board book for children who celebrate Christmas. Its charming story and sweetly mischievous artwork will delight kids and let them know that sleep is very important, especially if you want Santa to bring you presents on Christmas morning. Hazy Dell Press continues to put out children’s books of the highest quality, and I hope to see more holiday books (especially Halloween, of course) from them in the future.
